We have all seen the bumpersticker: "Why should I have to press 1 for English?".
Perhaps you have noticed the t-shirt at work: "Welcome to America, now speak English."

This is a very harsh method to get your point across. Perhaps a little assistance would be more appreciated, and have a better effect in the long run. That is why the Hasty Gazette has teamed up with en101 to bring you the first ever fully functional online class at the Hasty University!
Immigration is a very hot topic, it seems. Everyone has an opinion, everyone sees a few problems. Along with those problems, however, is opportunity.
Jobs Americans Won't Do
Some people, including President Bush, claim that immigrants are doing "jobs
Americans won't do". Perhaps that is true. In December, 230 people were
arrested at a meat packing plant in Worthington, Minnesota. The charges were
primarily "immigration charges", according to the Associated Press, with a few
"criminal charges, such as identity theft" thrown in for good measure.
Were these people taking jobs away Americans? I certainly haven't seen long lines of Worthington residents, job application in one hand, social security card in the other. Where are all the Americans who wanted to cut meat? The Worthington Swift packing plant employed only a portion of the over 1200 arrested illegal aliens that were working for Swift nationwide.
Hasty University has implemented a program to help these people become productive, legal members of society, by introducing an affordable, all encompassing English as a Second Language (ESL) program for the entire family, with the help of en101.
Learn to earn?
Hasty University's program is an internet based interactive program that one person, or the entire family, can use. It is designed to learn English, from any of a number of other languages, at your own pace. The idea is simple: We want to help everyone who wishes to learn English get their chance!
We believe that the key to being a productive member of any society is to be
able to communicate effectively. Someone who can speak the language will
have an easier time getting a job, keeping a job, advancing within a company, or
being promoted to a better position, or a better com
pany.
Let's face it, anyone can learn to repeat the phrase "Do you want fries with that?". That line alone will be enough to get a minimum wage job in almost any urban area of the United States. But minimum wage is not enough to raise a family, and the demands and challenges of flipping hamburgers is not enough for anyone to feel productive, to think through and solve problems, or to feel like they are living life to it's fullest.
